Hypnotically induced limb anesthesia and adaptation to displacing prisms: a failure to confirm.

چکیده
Three groups of subjects were tested for accuracy of pointing at a visual target before and after wearing displacing prisms. One group consisted of 10 highly susceptible subjects given a hypnotic suggestion for limb anesthesia following the pretest, and a second group included 10 low susceptible subjects instructed to fake limb anesthesia. A control group (n = 10) unselected on susceptibility received no special instructions. The high susceptibles reported significantly greater felt anesthesia than subjects in the other two treatments (p < .05). Nevertheless, subjects in all three groups showed very large displacement errors (i.e., errors in pointing) following prism removal. Our results failed to confirm previous reports that placement errors were eliminated by hypnotic suggestion in highly susceptible subjects. Theoretical implications are discussed.

Visuomotor adaptation to displacing prisms by adult and baby barn owls.
The capacity of barn owls to adapt visuomotor behavior in response to prism-induced displacement of the visual field was tested in babies and adults. Matched, binocular Fresnel prisms, which displaced the visual field 11 degrees, 23 degrees, or 34 degrees to the right, were placed on owls for periods of up to 99 d. Seven baby owls wore the prisms from the day the eyelids first opened; 2 owls wo...
متن کاملOptically induced changes in the couplings between vergence and accommodation.
Vergence-induced accommodation (V-A) and accommodation-induced vergence (A-V) were measured in human subjects before and after they had worn various optical devices for 30 min. Laterally displacing periscopic spectacles, which increase the required change in vergence per unit change in accommodation, caused decreases and increases in the gain of V-A and A-V responses, respectively. These observ...
متن کاملAdaptation to Laterally Displacing Prisms in Anisometropic Amblyopia.
PURPOSE Using visual feedback to modify sensorimotor output in response to changes in the external environment is essential for daily function. Prism adaptation is a well-established experimental paradigm to quantify sensorimotor adaptation; that is, how the sensorimotor system adapts to an optically-altered visuospatial environment. Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by s...
متن کاملPrism adaptation changes the subjective proprioceptive localization of the hands.
Prism adaptation involves a proprioceptive, a visual and a motor component. As the existing paradigms are not able to distinguish between these three components, the contribution of the proprioceptive component remains unclear. In the current study, a proprioceptive judgement task, in the absence of motor responses, was used to investigate how prism adaptation would specifically influences the ...
متن کاملMultisensory and Modality-Specific Influences on Adaptation to Optical Prisms
Visuo-motor adaptation to optical prisms displacing the visual scene (prism adaptation, PA) is a method used for investigating visuo-motor plasticity in healthy individuals and, in clinical settings, for the rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect. In the standard paradigm, the adaptation phase involves repeated pointings to visual targets, while wearing optical prisms displacing the visua...
